Port of Hanstholm Launches Idea Plan

Creation date: 27 April 2009

Port of Hanstholm Launches Idea Plan for Future, Sustainable Development of The Port

Denmark hosts in 2009 The United Nations climate Conference and it is therefore only natural for Port of Hanstholm to grab the baton and contribute to the global effort with a locally based sustainable development of the port.

The uniqe nature given conditions of Hanstholm - the wind and the waves - are normally considered a challenge. By changing them into an active and incorporate wave energy plants into the piers to take the energy out of the waves and wind turbines to exploit the never failing wind, this enormous nature given energy ressource becomes a positive fellow player. In connecion with an extension, it is therefore natural for the port to create a sustainable system. The goal for Port of Hanstholm is to incorporate sustainable solutions as a natural part of the port development plan from day 1.

"Port of Hanstholm is the Danish centre for wave energy. Wavestar completes a 1:2 test up to the climate conference in December 2009 and a fully scale test in 2010. Wavestar builds a test plant end of summer 2009 and Waveenergy is right now testing their plant in cooperation with the university of Aalborg. If Port of Hanstholm makes an effort to be an attractive cooperation partner and active fellow player, we have all possibilities to go really far"..says General Manager of the Port, Ms. Birgitte Juhl.

At the press meeting today on 29-01-09, Birgitte Juhl, General Manager of the Port, together with representatives of the board of directors of the port, consultants from KPF Architechts, Port Forum and parts of the Danish press, went through the idea plan, which is the result of an axtensive and interesting work in the 4 work groups, the control group and the board og the port. The idea plan now appears as a joint vision for the development of the port both short term and long term.

The idea plan contains ideas for the development of the fishing port, which is the "core business" of the port constituting 70% of the total revenue. Visionary thoughts have been though on the ferry and goods area, sustainable energy, events, esthetics, infrastructure and logistics. Next part of the process is to estimate expenses and incomes so that a financial plan, priorities and a time schedule can be made for the individual areas.

"Of course tests of the various models for a port extension will be carried out. Here I think of sand depositing, manoeuvre possibilities etc., and we will consult the smartest heads within this field,", Birgitte Juhl said at the press meeting.
