Information about Port of Hanstholm

Location

Skagerrak - 57°07.4'N 8°35.7'E – map 92

The port

Consists of an outer port and 8 basins. Basins 1-3 are fishing and traffic port basins.

Basins 4-8 are dedicated fishing port basins.

Approximately 1 nautical mile NE of the Port of Hanstholm is Roshage Pier, which stretches approximately 310 m to the north, to approximately 3.5 m deep water, and is 6.2 m wide. The end of the pier is 2.2 m above the water. The pier was originally built to provide shelter for boats during landing on the coast. Surface and depth conditions around the pier vary according to wind and current conditions. Vessels should keep a good distance from the pier.

The water depth at the outer end of the pier is 3.5 m and the depth decreases approaching the shore.

A white flashing light on a pole is located at the end of the pier.

A cable to Norway runs from the coast approximately 200 m west of the pier; cable beacons at the landing site.

Note: There is no berth at the pier.

Depths

8.4 m in basin 1
4.9 to 9.0 m in basins 2, 3 and 4
4.9 m in basins 5 and 6
3.9 m in basin 7
9.0 m in basin 8

Due to sand movements on the seabed, the given depths cannot always be expected in front of the port, in the outer port basin or anywhere in the port basins.

As far as possible, efforts are made to keep the approach in the lighted area dredged to 9.0 m during average spring low tide.

Largest ships

The size of the largest ship that can navigate the port depends on the current wind, current and wave conditions, as well as the current tidal and depth conditions.

Tidal conditions

The difference between average high tide and average low tide is 0.3 m. Western winds can cause up to 1.3 m high tides and eastern winds up to 1.5 m low tide.

Lunitidal interval: 3 hours 43 minutes.

Currents

Winds between west and south cause an eastward current and winds between east and north cause a westward current. Given the nature of these currents, it requires special knowledge to call into or depart from the port in adverse conditions. This is especially true for vessels with limited engine power.

Note that both westward and eastward currents can exceed 2 knots.

Navigation

The port is usually navigable both day and night. Large amounts of sand are typically deposited in the entry to the port, thus reducing the water depth.

Altered seabed conditions can cause changing, unpredictable and difficult current and wave conditions.

Ships are asked to be particularly alert and to contact the port guard before calling into port to get the latest information about seabed and depth conditions.

Speed limit

The maximum permitted speed in the port basins, except for the outer port, is 3 knots.

Buoying

The fairwaybouy is located approximately 1200 m NE of the port entrance.

A wave meter is located approximately 140 m SE of the fairwaybouy.

Anchorage

In Vigsø Bay

Pilotage

The pilot service at the Port of Hanstholm is provided by the local port pilot.

Vessels whose captains are not familiar with the conditions are advised to use a pilot or to obtain information from the port guard about the current conditions prior to arrival or departure.

Pilots should be ordered from the pilot office no later than 24 hours before expected arrival.
